Why are we serving here?

One of the ways ForColumbia strives to love and serve our neighbors is by serving those non-profit organizations that are actively working every day in the lives of people in Columbia. True North is a women’s shelter providing safety, counseling and other services to women (and their children) coming out of domestic or sexual violence situations. While offering safe housing, advocacy and support, women of abuse are able to begin the process of healing and regaining control of their lives. When we give our time for the benefit of others, especially when they are going through a dark season in life, we send the message that they are valuable.

What can I expect?

ForColumbia volunteers will be working both inside and outside at True North on a variety of projects, including:

  • creating better organization of each of the five closets in the second floor rooms;
  • painting the first floor ceiling of the family room, laundry room, and computer room;
  • switching out lights on the second floor;
  • installing garden boxes;
  • weeding and mulching property outside and cleaning up the yard area;
  • repairing and staining the “bike shed”.

What should I bring?

  • Volunteers should bring work gloves, and be prepared to work outside.
  • If sunny, we encourage you to consider bringing sunscreen and/or a hat in case you are assigned to the outdoor work.
  • We encourage all volunteers to wear close-toed shoes.
  • Be sure to wear your #ForColumbia2019 T-shirt!

Can I serve here with my children?

No, this is not an appropriate site for younger children. Middle and high school students, however, can serve with their families here.
